Pittsburgh next faces Wagner College and University of Maryland-Baltimore County in an effort to improve in the rankings. The games will take place on Friday and Saturday at 8 pm at the Airport Ice Arena and tickets will be available at the gate ($4 for adults and $2 for students). In related news, Panthers 2 was recently ranked 11th in the ACHA DIII Northeast Rankings. The Panthers hit the road this weekend to face California University of Pennsylvania (CHA) and West Virginia (Gold). -- A. MECS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2004 2:01:46 PM EST WATKINSON NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK Congratulations to goaltender Chris Watkinson who was recently named the College Hockey East (CHE) player of the week.
Chris played outstanding in goal in two crucial CHE victories for Panthers 2. He stopped 87 of 93 shots in wins over IUP-DIII and Carnegie Mellon. Chris started the weekend by stopping 45 of 47 shots in a huge 3-2 victory over defending CHE Champion, IUP-DIII. The next night he was the winning goalie in a 15-4 win over CMU. Chris currently has a record of 2-1 and is tied for 2nd in CHE with a .921 save percentage. -- A. MECS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2004 10:39:40 PM EST PANTHERS 2 SWEEPS WEEKEND GAMES Panthers 2 had a huge weekend as the team defeated both IUP DIII and Carnegie Mellon University. On Friday night, the 11th ranked Panthers (ACHA DIII Northeast) defeated 2nd ranked IUP by a 3-2 score. Goaltender Chris Watkinson stole the show as he saved 45 of 47 shots on goal. Forwards Ty Heller (2 goals) and Jon Colarusso (1 goal) provided the offense.
On Saturday, the Panthers rolled over CMU 15-4. Three Pitt players had hat tricks: Ted Knafelc (5 goals), Zach Cain (3 goals, 2 assists), and Luke Heller (3 goals, 1 assist). Ty Heller and Matt Haught each notched 4 assists. Watkinson had another solid game in net as he saved 42 of 46 shots on goal. Panthers 1 (ranked 7th in ACHA DII Southeast) attempted to add to its successful run, but fell short to IUP DII (ranked 3rd) on Saturday night. Pittsburgh jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but IUP capitalized by scoring two power play goals early in the second period and Pittsburgh could not manage to rebound and ultimately lost 5-2. The Panthers are looking forward to next weekend at the University of Maryland and UMBC. -- A. MECS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2004 3:19:18 PM EST PITTSBURGH RANKED 7TH IN SOUTHEAST REGION OF ACHA DII Panthers 1 is ranked 7th in the newest ACHA Division II Southeast Rankings. The Panthers were able to move up in the rankings largely because of an early season win against 8th ranked N.C. State and a recent tie against 4th ranked Ohio State.
