The Pitt D2 Panthers have been ranked #10 in the latest ACHA Division 2 Southeast Region Rankings. The ranking is significant as it is the highest ranking in the team’s history. In addition, a Top 10 ranking will earn an invitation to the ACHA D2 Regional Tournament.

The team improved on its previous #12 ranking due to impressive wins over #6 Kennesaw State and #13 Rowan at the Liberty Showcase.

The D2 Panthers have yet another member of the 100 point club as the milestones for this team continue to come. Senior Shane Martin, a native of Lancaster, PA, reached the coveted mark when he scored a goal against Pittsburgh city rival Robert Morris University on November 11, 2011.

Since coming to Pitt as a freshman in the 2008-2009 season, Martin’s statistical progression has been as relentless as his style of play. He entered this season with 92 points and has reached the 100 point milestone in just 86 career games. A gifted passer and playmaker, Martin has amassed 63 career assists. He also has sole possession of the all-time lead in Pitt hockey penalty minutes as well as the Pitt overall record for assists in a game with a 6 assist effort in October 2009.

Head Coach Joe Rodella recently reflected on Shane’s achievements and said, “There are always players that have value beyond statistics and their teammates recognize it. In Shane’s case, he has those qualities that are hard to analyze statistically and he has the numbers to back it up. He’s always brought grit and determination, and always been a key offensive producer. He’s been fun to coach and watch”.

Martin joins Will Pearl and Stephen Switucha as 100 point club members from the memorable freshman class of 2008, and there may be more to come. So far the trio comprises 3 of the 5 all-time D2 100 point players. They are also included in the 10 who have reached the milestone from overall Pitt history.

As the D2 Panthers (11-3) race toward their team goals, they are being fed by some tremendous individual performances and Shane Martin has been contributing toward the progress since he arrived in Oakland.
